The first six months of activity of the GMES Emergency Management Service - Mapping
In the first six months of operations of the EMS-Mapping, nearly 20 activations, almost one per week, were handled and related maps were produced in rush mode by the contracted service provider, a group of European industries led by the Italian company e-GEOS executing the service coordination and mapping production tasks.
This was done in close cooperation with the staff of the European Commission Emergency Response Centre (ERC/MIC) of DG Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), which receives all activation requests and authorises these based on the specific criteria of the service, the DG Joint Research Centre (JRC), which is responsible for the technical supervision of the service, and the European Space Agency, which procures the GMES satellite data from relevant sensors to the Service.
The European Commission's DG Enterprise and Industry has the overall funding and governance role in the GMES programme and, in particular in the GMES Initial Operations.
